TAM (Total Addressable Market)

Total addressable market is the total revenue opportunity available if your product achieved 100% market share in your defined market.

Total addressable market (TAM) is the total revenue opportunity that exists for your product or service if you captured every possible customer in your defined market. It represents the upper bound of your business potential and is a critical input for strategic planning, fundraising, and go-to-market prioritization.

TAM is typically calculated using one of two approaches. Top-down starts with industry analyst data on total market size and narrows it based on your specific segment and pricing. Bottom-up counts the total number of potential customers that match your ideal customer profile and multiplies by your average contract value. The bottom-up approach is usually more accurate because it forces you to define exactly who your customer is.

TAM matters for GTM operations because it shapes resource allocation. If your TAM in the mid-market segment is 5,000 companies and you have already sold to 400, you have penetrated 8% — plenty of room to grow with your current strategy. If you have penetrated 40%, you need to think about expanding into new segments or geographies.

Related concepts include SAM (Serviceable Addressable Market) — the portion of TAM you can realistically reach with your current distribution model — and SOM (Serviceable Obtainable Market) — the portion of SAM you can realistically capture in the near term given competitive dynamics and your current resources.

A practical caution: TAM estimates are used to justify strategies, but they should not drive them. A $10B TAM means nothing if your GTM motion cannot reach those buyers. Focus on SOM for near-term planning and use analytics to track actual market penetration by segment, which gives you a grounded view of where your growth opportunities really are.
