Keyword Research

Keyword research is the process of identifying the search terms your target audience uses so you can create content that ranks and drives qualified traffic.

Keyword research is the process of discovering and analyzing the specific words and phrases your target audience types into search engines, so you can create content that matches their queries and ranks in search results.

In GTM marketing, keyword research is the foundation of any organic growth strategy. It tells you exactly what your potential customers are looking for, how many of them are searching, and how competitive it will be to rank for those terms. Without it, you’re guessing about what content to create.

The process typically involves: generating a list of seed topics based on your product and audience, using keyword tools to find actual search queries and their monthly volume, assessing the difficulty of ranking for each keyword, and mapping keywords to content types and pages on your site.

For example, if you sell a sales engagement platform, keyword research might reveal that “how to write cold emails” gets 8,000 searches per month with moderate competition, while “best sales engagement software” gets 2,000 searches with high competition. Both are worth targeting, but with different content types — a how-to guide for the first and a comparison page for the second.

The key distinction is between informational keywords (people learning about a topic), commercial keywords (people evaluating solutions), and transactional keywords (people ready to buy). A balanced content strategy covers all three, creating a path from awareness to purchase.

Don’t just chase volume. A keyword with 500 monthly searches that perfectly matches your ICP’s intent is more valuable than a generic term with 50,000 searches. SEO ops tools help you identify the right keywords and track your ranking progress over time.
