The teams that get real value from these tools are the ones that know how to instruct them properly. Bad prompts produce generic output that still needs heavy editing. Good prompts produce drafts that are 80-90% ready to use.
Practical prompt engineering for GTM work comes down to a few principles. Be specific about the output format — tell the model exactly what structure you want (bullet points, email format, table). Provide context about your ICP, product, and tone. Use examples of good output (few-shot prompting) so the model understands your standard. Set constraints like word count, reading level, or things to avoid. And iterate — treat your first prompt as a draft and refine based on what comes back.
For example, instead of “write a cold email to a VP of Sales,” a well-engineered prompt specifies the industry, the pain point you’re addressing, the desired tone, the call-to-action, and includes an example of an email that performed well.
GTM teams are increasingly building prompt libraries — tested, versioned prompts for common tasks like persona research, competitive analysis, and content generation.
