SERP Monitoring

SERP monitoring is the practice of tracking your search engine rankings for target keywords to measure SEO performance and spot competitive shifts.

SERP monitoring is the practice of tracking where your website appears in search engine results pages for specific keywords over time. It shows whether your SEO efforts are working, which competitors are gaining or losing visibility, and where new opportunities exist.

For GTM teams, search visibility directly impacts pipeline. When a prospect searches for a problem you solve and finds your competitor instead of you, that is pipeline you never see. SERP monitoring quantifies this visibility gap and helps you prioritize which keywords to target based on business impact.

Key things to track include: your ranking position for target keywords, ranking changes over time (trending up or down), which competitors appear for the same keywords, featured snippet ownership, and the estimated search volume for each keyword. Tracking position alone is not enough — you need to connect rankings to traffic and traffic to conversions to understand actual business impact.

A practical approach: build your keyword list around three categories. Brand keywords (your company name and product names) — you should own these. Category keywords (what your product category is called) — these are competitive but high-intent. Problem keywords (the problems your product solves, phrased as questions) — these often have less competition and attract early-stage buyers.

SERP monitoring also helps you spot algorithm changes and competitor moves quickly. If you drop from position 3 to position 12 overnight, you need to know immediately, not in your monthly report. Setting up automated alerts through SEO operations tools ensures your team catches ranking changes while there is still time to respond and protect your search visibility.
